Profile

The American India Pale Ale is a hop-forward beer style that originated in the United States during the craft beer revolution of the 1980s. It is a modern take on the traditional English IPA, which was developed during the 18th century to withstand the long voyage from England to India. The American IPA is characterized by its high hop bitterness, aroma, and flavor, which is achieved by using American-grown hops that have high alpha acid content and a variety of aromas, such as citrus, pine, and tropical fruits.

American IPAs are usually golden to amber in color with a slight haze often considered acceptable due to dry hopping processes; however, some examples can be quite clear. A moderate to large off-white head can form when poured and should display good retention. Malt characteristics typically take a back seat but provide a neutral backdrop featuring bready or caramel notes and sufficient sweetness to balance out the pronounced hop bitterness. The depth of hoppiness is what truly defines this beer style. Taste buds are greeted with similar notes as detected by the nose – intense hop flavors commonly described as floral, fruity (including citrus-like lemon or orange), piney, resinous, or earthy depending on the variety of hops used. Light sweetness can be perceived amidst the prominent bitterness that persists through to a dry finish.

While drawing inspiration from its English predecessor – noted for more forward malt character and balanced earthy hops – this style distinguishes itself by celebrating bold American hops which provide distinctive flavor signatures uncharacteristic of European varietals.
