Profile

Hazy IPA, also known as New England IPA (NEIPA), is a style of beer that has gained immense popularity for its distinct approach to the traditional India Pale Ale. It deviates from the bright clarity that is often associated with IPAs and instead embraces a hazy, opaque appearance which can range from slightly veiled to resembling orange juice. This characteristic haze comes from a combination of factors including the use of high protein grains, such as wheat or oats, specific yeast strains that do not flocculate (settle) well, and dry hopping techniques that introduce hop particulates into the beer.

The flavor and aroma profile of Hazy IPAs are predominantly focused on hop character - they burst with fruity, floral, and tropical hop notes without the aggressive bitterness typically found in many other IPA styles. Instead, these beers lean towards a smoother bitterness and highlight flavors like mango, passionfruit, citrus, and stone fruit derived from American or new world hop varieties. The mouthfeel is enhanced by the protein-rich grains used in the brewing process as well as residual sugars, contributing to a soft and pillowy texture that rounds out any sharper flavors.

In relation to other styles, Hazy IPAs are often considered a subset of American IPAs but feature less perceived bitterness due to their specific hopping methods. They bear some resemblance to traditional English IPAs in their malt character but are generally more aromatic and less bitter than both English and West Coast style IPAs. Ultimately they stand apart by offering an alternative perception of balance where hop flavor takes center stage while bitterness steps back; this contrast can be attributed to both their unique brewing methods and ingredient selection designed specifically to create this endearing haziness that carries with it an abundance of hop-driven taste experiences.
